Top 10 things you should know before purchasing a vehicle and why your next vehicle should be purchased from Doug's Auto.
  1. Know the value of the vehicle you are buying. Some dealers price above current NADA pricing.
  2. Know the resale of the vehicle you are buying. Some vehicles depreciate more than others, so know what your resale will be one to two years down the road at trade-in time.
  3. Know what you can afford and what you can afford for payments. Don't have your payments lower than what your car depreciates. That is what dealerships call "upside-down" on your purchase.
  4. Shop and compare. Just because you see "SALE" doesn't mean it is a good or fair value.
  5. Push-Pull-Drag sales of $1500 to $2000. In most cases this vehicle is overpriced to begin with. Some dealers offer $1500 to $2000 for "junkyard trade-ins, which is not practical.
  6. Always get the full price of the vehicle you are looking at up front -- Before you drive, sign a commitment paper, or get attached.
  7. Beware of 0.0% interest rates. New vehicles purchased lose up to half of their original value in less than a year. So ask yourself if it's really worth loosing that amount of your investment when you can buy the current year vehicle in some cases for half the sticker price with a bumper-to-bumper warranty.
  8. Convincing sales people are paid on commission. "No sale, no commission." Friends and relatives still work for the dealership. The dealership is the one making the money. Deal directly with the owner for the best deal. No run around. No middleman.
  9. Beware of back yard dealerships -- here today, gone tomorrow. Never sign an agreement to purchase or give a down payment on sight unseen vehicles. Not all vehicles are the same quality and you may not like the vehicle the dealership brought you, but you're stuck.
  10. Always get the previous owner's name, phone number, and a background report of the vehicle (CarFax makes these available). Dealerships can give out previous owner's name and phone number with a signoff of the previous owner. Also, any vehicle with a damage disclosure must be posted on the window of the vehicle before sale, not after. "It's the law."
